Our secret guest

Yesterday,  a very special guest came in our classroom. We had to guess who he was and why he was here.
How exciting !
His name is Eamon - or Marc Turpin.
Why does he have two names ?
Because he was working at the French Légion Étrangère, which is a special unit of the French army for foreign soldiers, so he had a kiwi name and a French pseudonym. Only men can join the "Légion".  How unfair !
He had a huge 24 kilos bag full of military clothes and items, and we were lucky enough to try them...and the bag !

That bag seems a bit heavy for Cedric !

We learnt a lot with our visitor, we had to locate so many new countries on our world map
as  Eamon told us about 5 different countries he worked in Africa: Mali, Gabon, Niger, Côte d'Ivoire and Centrafrican Republic. He also worked in French Guyana. We discovered what an 'orpailleur' is and how Cote d'Ivoir got its name. We had some serious talk about why petrol is so important and often the cause of war and how some children are trained to be soldiers.

"Jungle" style for  Juliette! It's  a Brasilian military jacket.

We also learnt a lot of new big words like "boussole', "munition", "défenses d'éléphant",  and how '"mercure" destroys the Amazone.

That's a match ! Anita looks fantastic in her "desert" outfit.

We talked about the unusual food food Eamon tasted as he worked in those exotic countries, such as anaconda's flesh while in French Guyana.

With her broken arm, Loane looks like a real warrior !

We learnt that the Saint patron of the "Légionaires" is Saint Michel and recalled the story of St Mickel killing the dragon and the famous fountain in Paris.

Sophie, lovely warrior of the jungle.

There are 3 different types of outfits depending on the location the army operates in: forest, jungle or desert.

 Alice D a desert fox !

Ruma 1 children all got a chance to carry the 25 kg bag and try some army clothes.

Even as a soldier, Emily's still lovely !

 Nice outfit Louis G !

Zvee is already at war, hiding himself from potential enemies !

A soldier in tongs ? That's possible for Miss Nina !

Even our stagiaire tried the outfits ! With her, Lily and Max are a super trio of the army!

Tristan is the new Rambo with his military jackets...and his rangers !
They weigh over a 1 kilo each.

Molly has a new coat !

Captain Max with his white képi !

Ava with the béret and Cédric aka général the Gaulle.

The béret is a symbol of the skydivers (that was Eamon's job), whereas the képi is a symbol of the Légion Etrangère.

Ollie with the képi, the belt with numerous pockets (for water, food and munition and...grenades !)

Once full, the belt can weigh about 10 kg!

One of our best memory of the year: Eamon has found a new weight for  his bag !

Eamon was a "Para" although, when he was our age, he dreamt to be an All Black. He's back now from France because he wants to enroll in the Kiwi army as it is very hard to get up the French Legion ladder when you are a foreigner. He was really happy to talk French with us. He can also speak Russian! We hope we will see him again next year.

Thank you so much for sharing your time and experiences with Ruma 1 Eamon! A bientôt!

Cooking Time !

Since this Term's topic was about Food and Cultural differences, Ruma 1 cooked a different recipe from all around the world each week.

It was a fun way to do math. We learnt how to convert ingredients proportions, talked about ratio and fractions as well as measuring capacity.

Group 1 : Louis G, Emmanuel, Tristan, Nina and Pauline cooking spring rolls with Delphy and Frederique

Group 2 : Ava S, Loane, Molly, Ava H, Luca, Ciel and Louis A enjoying their delicious vege tortillas

We had  Frederique Abbot (Molly's mum) 's wonderful help, and cooked some fantastic meals : spring rolls from Vietnam, tortillas from Mexico, and pastries from Portugal. Unfortunately we don't have any pictures of our Portuguese cooks but they were awesome.

Thanks to our little chefs !

World Food Basket Topic

During our inquiry unit on "World Food Basket" , we used pictures showing the weekly  grocery shopping of families from all around the world. The journalist had researched how much each family had spent. Since it was for an English newspaper, the amount was given in Pounds.

Each student 'adopted' one family.  This great resource helped us to study some geography and maths in a fun way.

We soon realized that in order to compare what those families spending was, we needed to convert pounds into NZ dollars, so we had to research exchange rates, once we found out, this lead us to round up  and  multiply 3 digit numbers. Some students discovered that there are many different types of money around the world and that there are quite a few different types of dollars which don't have the same value. We also learnt about conventions to write amounts : they are the opposit in French and English.
Sophia and Ciel with their families from Greenland and Germany. What a gap between their spendings !

We discussed differences between families, and the amount process food versus fresh food. We were amazed to see that the Malian family would spend 32 NZ dollars  per week for 15 people, while the Luxembourg family would spend almost NZ $ 600 for 4 people!!

A World Food Basket in NZ dollars

Students located all the countries on our class world map and made a sign for their own country. Then we all sat outside on a fantastic giant world map drawn by Pauline and Delphy. Each student sat  in their country's place.

International Food Court Parade

On Monday, it was International Food Court Parade Day in Richmond Road.
Each class had to choose one country and create a show on it.
We had a shared lunch and so we brought food from all around the world !

English ginger cookies from Emilie and Mexican Guacamole from Alice S. Yum !

Nina is enjoying her international lunch ! (Japanese sushis, English strawberries, French bread, Canadian crumble, Mexican burritos, quesadillas and corn chips...)

we learnt a lot from each other's stories of recipes

Hungarian recipe from Lily and her mum !

At 1.30 we all went in the hall to do the Parade. For our show we danced a Portuguese dance, very famous in Europe, called Kuduro, that Pauline taught us. We had also Portuguese outfits. We were the starting classroom so we were a bit stressed...

...but we were very synchronised the whole time...

...and in the end, we were very proud of ourselves !

What an awesome performance ! Special thanks to Miss Seba and Ruma 4 for hosting the show and thanks to Pauline for training us with so much enthusiasm and energy!

Swimming Pool Week

Last week, we went to the swimming pool, at the Olympic Pools, Broadway.

What a splash, Emmanuel !

We learnt how to improve our swimming, some of us even managed to crawl 50 meters long without stopping ! We also learnt how to dive properly.

Lily, our female version of Michael Phelps

We had a lot of fun jumping in the water at the end, even our stagiaires swam with us !

Louis A, Emmanuel, Ava, Anita, Sophie and Nauatea rocked in their goggles !
